इंग्लंडनंतर आता पाकिस्तानचा संघ हा न्यूझीलंडच्या संघाबरोबर दोन हात करणार आहे. न्यूझीलंडविरुद्धच्या मालिकेसाठी पाकिस्तानचा संघ निवडण्याची जबाबदारी आता आफ्रिदीकडे सोपवण्यात आली आहे. कारण पीसीबीने आता आफ्रिदीला निवड समिती अध्यक्ष बनवले आहे. त्यामुळे आता न्यूझीलंडविरुद्धच्या मालिकेसाठी पाकिस्तानचा संघ निवडण्याची जबाबदारी आता आफ्रिदीवर असणार आहे. गेल्या काही दिवसांमध्ये पाकिस्तानच्या क्रिकेटमध्ये मोठे बदल पाहायला मिळाले. काही दिवसांपूर्वीच पाकिस्तान क्रिकेट मंडळाच्या अध्यक्षपदावरून रमीझ राजा यांची हकालपट्टी करण्यात आली होती. हा पाकिस्तानच्या क्रिकेटला मोठा धक्का बसला होता. पण पाकिस्तानच्या क्रिकेट संघाची कामगिरी गेल्या काही महिन्यांमध्ये ढासळलेली पाहायला मिळाली आहे.
इंग्लंड आणि पाकिस्तान यांच्यामध्ये तीन कसोटी सामन्यांनी मालिका खेळवण्यात आली होती. या मालिकेतील पहिल्या कसोटी सामन्यात इंग्लंडने पाकिस्तानवर ७४ धावांनी विजय मिळवला होता. त्यानंतर खेळवण्यात आलेल्या दुसऱ्या कसोटी सामन्यात इंग्लंडने पाकिस्तानवर २६ धावांनी मात केली होती. या मालिकेतील तिसऱ्या आणि अखेरच्या कसोटी सामन्यात इंग्लंडने पाकिस्तानला ८ विकेट्स राखन धुळ चारली होती. त्यामुळे इंग्लंडने या कसोटी मालिकेत पाकिस्तानवर ३-० असा विजय मिळवला होता. त्यामुळे आपल्याच मातीत पाकिस्तानवर मालिका ०-३ अशी गमावण्याची नामुष्की ओढावली होती. त्यामुळे आता पाकिस्तानच्या संघात मोठे बदल होऊ शकतात आणि ते करण्याची जबाबदारी आता आफ्रिदीवर सोपवण्यात आली आहे. त्यामुळे न्यूझीलंडविरुद्धच्या मालिकेसाठी आफ्रिदी कसा संघ निवडतो आणि पाकिस्तानच्या संघाल किती यश मिळते, याकडे सर्वांचे लक्ष लागलेले असणार आहे. आफ्रिदीसाठी ही पहिलीच संधी असणार आहे. आफ्रिदी या पदावर हंगामी स्वरुपात असेल. कदाचित या मालिकेनंतर त्याला हे पद सोडावे लागू शकते.
