एका रिपोर्टनुसार, मृत्यूशी लढत असताना इरफान यांनी बेडच्या बाजूला बसलेल्या पत्नी सुतापा सिकदर यांना ‘अम्मा खोलीत आहे’ असं सांगितलं. मृत्यूवेळी होणाऱ्या वेदना कमी करण्यासाठी अम्मा आली असं इरफान यांना वाटत होतं. इरफान यांनी सुतापा यांना सांगितलं, ‘बघ ती माझ्याच बाजूला बसली आहे. अम्मा मला न्यायला आली आहे.’ इरफान यांचं हे बोलणं ऐकून सुतापा यांचा बांध फुटला आणि त्या रडू लागल्या. यानंतर काही क्षणांनी इरफान खान यांनी जगाचा निरोप घेतला.

इरफान खान यांना न्यूरोएण्डोक्राइन ट्यूमरचा आजार होता. लंडनमध्ये त्यांच्यावर काही काळ उपचारही सुरू होते. तब्येतीत सुधारणा आल्यानंतर ते भारतात परतले होते. आपल्या हरहुन्नरी अभिनयाने प्रेक्षकांच्या मनाचा ठाव घेणाऱ्या इरफान यांना पद्मश्री, राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कार, एशियन सिनेपुरस्कार, ६ फिल्मफेअर पुरस्कार, टाइम इचीवमेन्ट पुरस्कार यांसारख्या अनेक नावाजलेल्या पुरस्काराने सन्मानित करण्यात आले.
