सोमवारी नंदीच्या मूर्तीजवळ असलेल्या विहिरीत शिवलिंग सापडल्याचा दावा हिंदू याचिकाकर्त्यांनी केला आहे. या विहिराची तपासणी केली असता तेथे १२ फुटांचे शिवलिंग आढळले, असा दावा करण्यात आला. त्यातबरोबर हिंदू पक्षाने शिवलिंगाची छायाचित्रे शेअर करत दावा केला आहे की, ही छायाचित्रे ज्ञानव्यापी मशिदीतील विहिरीतील शिवलिंगाची आहेत.
मशिदीत शिवलिंग सापडल्याचा दावा केल्यानंतर हा परिसर सील, तसेच संरक्षित करून कुणालाही प्रवेशाची परवानगी न देण्याचे आदेश सत्र न्यायालयाने दिले. सत्र न्यायाधीश रवीकुमार दिवाकर यांनी मशिदीचा परिसर सील करण्यास सांगून येथे कडेकोट सुरक्षा पुरवण्याचे आदेश जिल्हा दंडाधिकारी, पोलिस आयुक्त आणि निमलष्करी दलाच्या जवानांना दिले.

काशी विश्वनाथ मंदिराचाच एक भाग असलेले येथील शिवमंदिर मुघल सम्राट औरंगजेबाने उद्ध्वस्त करून मशिद उभारली असून, तेथे आम्हाला पूजेची परवनगी द्यावी, अशी मागणी करणारी याचिका काही महिलांनी वाराणसी जिल्हा न्यायालयात केली. त्यानंतर ग्यानवापी मशिद परिसराचे व्हिडिओ चित्रण; तसेच सर्वेक्षण करण्याची मुभा न्यायालयनियुक्त समितीला देतानाच हे सर्वेक्षण १७ मेपर्यंत पूर्ण करण्याचा आदेश गुरुवारी वाराणसी जिल्हा न्यायालयाने दिला होता. मशिदीच्या आवारातील दोन तळघरांना कुलूप असल्याचे कारण मशिद व्यवस्थापनाकडून देण्यात आले होते. मात्र, या कुलपांची चावी मिळत नसल्यास ते तोडून हे सर्वेक्षण पू्र्ण करावे, असेही न्यायालयाने स्पष्ट केले होते. त्यानुसार सलग तीन दिवस सर्वेक्षण करण्यात आले. त्यात शेवटच्या दिवशी, सोमवारी मशिदीतील वझूखान्याजवळ शिवलिंग आढळल्याचा दावा हिंदू प्रतिनिधींकडून करण्यात आला. दरम्यान, सापडलेला भाग येथील एका कारंज्याचा असल्याचा दावा मशिद व्यवस्थापन समितीने केला आहे. हा भाग सील करण्याचे आदेश देण्यापूर्वी मुस्लिमांचे प्रतिनिधित्व करणाऱ्या वकिलांची बाजू पूर्ण ऐकूनही घेतली नसल्याचे त्यांनी म्हटले.
