आजच्या सामन्यात चेन्नईने हैदराबादपुढे विजयासाठी १६८ धावांचे आव्हान ठेवले होते. या आव्हानाचा पाठलाग करताना हैदराबादच्या केन विल्यम्सनने अर्धशतक झळकावले होते. पण केन बाद झाल्यावर चेन्नईचा विजय सुकर झाला. त्यामुळे या सामन्याच चेन्नईला हैदराबादवर मात करता आली. या स्पर्धेतील चेन्नईचा हा तिसरा विजय ठरला.

चेन्नईच्या संघाने यावेळी नाणेफेक जिंकली आणि कर्णधार महेंद्रसिंग धोनीने प्रथम फलंदाजी करण्याचा निर्णय घेतला. चेन्नईचे सलामीवीर जेव्हा मैदानात उतरले तेव्हा सर्वांनाच धक्का बसला. कारण यावेळी शेन वॉटसन सलामीवीर म्हणून मैदानात उतरला नव्हता. यावेळी युवा खेळाडू सॅम करनला सलामीसाठी पाठवण्यात आले होते. सॅमनेही यावेळी आपल्यावर ठेवलेला विश्वास सार्थ ठरवला. सॅमने यावेळी तीन चौकार आणि दोन षटकारांच्या जोरावर ३१ धावांची दमदार खेळी साकारली.
सॅम बाद झाल्यावर शेन वॉटसन आणि चौथ्या क्रमांकावर फलंदाजीला आलेल्या अंबाती रायुडू यांची चांगलीच जोडी जमली. या दोघांनी तिसऱ्या विकेटसाठी यावेळी ८१ धावांची भागीदारी रचली. वॉटसनने यावेळी ४२ धावा केल्या, तर रायुडूकडून ४१ धावा पाहायला मिळाल्या. चार धावांच्या फरकाने हे दोघेही बाद झाले.
ही जोडी तंबूत परतल्यावर कर्णधार महेंद्रसिंग धोनी आणि रवींद्र जडेजा ही जोडी मैदानात होती. या दोघांनीही यावेळी चांगली फलंदाजी केल्याचे पाहायला मिळाले. धोनीने यावेळी २१ धावा केल्याचे पाहायला मिळाले.
